Genel cerrahi: anatomi, fizyoloji, metabolizma, immünoloji, patoloji, yoğun bakım, neoplaziler(kanser), yara iyileşmesi, şok ve resüsitasyonu kapsayan, tüm cerrahi alanlar için ortak merkezi bir bilgi çekirdeğine sahip cerrahi disiplindir. Çoğunlukla bilindiği gibi, ilaç yada diğer tedavi yöntemleri ile iyileşmesi mümkün olmayan sistemik veya bölgesel hastalıkların çeşitli cerrahi yöntemlerle tedavi edilmesi amaçlamaktadır.
Bir genel cerrah, geniş tabanlı bir cerrahın eğitimi için gerekli olan cerrahinin dokuz ana bileşeninde, tanı, ameliyat öncesi-ameliyat sırasında ve ameliyat sonrası yönetim, komplikasyonların yönetimi de dahil olmak üzere uzmanlık bilgisine ve deneyimine sahiptir. Yukarıda bahsedilen ve genel cerrahların yetkin olduğu bu dokuz ana bileşen:
Sindirim sistemi, özofagus(yemek borusu), mide, duodenum, ince-kalın bağırsak, rektum ve ilişkili yapılar

Baş ve boyun, travma, vasküler, endokrin ve onkolojik rahatsızlıklar—özellikle deri, tükürük bezleri, tiroid, paratiroid tümörleri

Cerrahi onkoloji, kanser hastasının tarama, gözetim, cerrahi ek tedavi, rehabilitasyon ve takip ile koordineli çoklu tedavi yönetimi
Travmanın kapsamlı yönetimi, kas-iskelet sistemi, el ve baş yaralanmaları dahil—yaralı hastanın tüm bakım aşamalarından sorumlu olmak, genel cerrahinin temel bir bileşenidir
Cerrahi durumları olan kritik hastaların tam bakımı, acil servis, yoğun bakım ünitesi ve travma/yanık ünitelerinde
