Gastroenteroloji; sindirim sistemi olarak tanımladığımız yutak, yemek borusu, mide, ince ve kalın bağırsak ve anüs organlarına ek olarak karaciğer, safra kesesi, pankreas, rektum organlarına da ilişkin hastalıkları inceleyen, tanı ve tedavisi ile ilgilenen bilim dalıdır.
Gastroenterolojik hastalıklarda sıklıkla yaşanan mide bulantısı, mide yanması, şişkinlik hissi, karın veya gaz ağrıları, makatta kanama, siyah dışkı gibi belirgin semptomlar gözlemleniyor ise mutlaka bir gastroenteroloji uzmanı ile görüşülmelidir.
Biyokimyasal ve radyolojik tetkiklerin yanı sıra Gastroenteroloji bölümünde teşhis için endoskopik yöntemlere de sıklıkla başvurulmaktadır. Kamera sistemi ile bölge incelemesinin gerçekleştirildiği endoskopi ve kolonoskopi yöntemleriyle yemek borusu, mide, oniki parmak bağırsağı, kolon ve makat bölgesindeki hastalıklar teşhis edilebilmektedir.
