Specialist in Child Health and Diseases Dr. Havva Evrengül at Private Izmir Gazi Hospital stated that some infectious diseases are common and spread quickly in children starting preschool and provided information about some measures to take to prevent infectious diseases in children starting school.

Stating that infectious diseases are frequently seen in children starting school, Dr. Havva Evrengül said, "It is normal for such situations to occur since our children move from the home environment to crowded and social settings during this period." Dr. Havva Evrengül made the following suggestions to reduce the risk of infectious diseases in children starting school:

  • Don't neglect vaccinations: In preschool children, all age-appropriate vaccines should be completed. We must not forget that vaccines protect children from many serious diseases.
  • Provide handwashing education: Small children should be taught how and when to wash their hands in simple and fun ways. This education can be supported with games or songs. Handwashing habits should be instilled especially before eating, after using the toilet, and after playing outside.
  • Pay attention to hygiene of toys and equipment: Frequently used items like toys, table surfaces, and doorknobs should be cleaned and disinfected regularly. Shared toys should be disinfected especially after sick children have played with them.
  • Don't send sick children to school: It should be ensured that children showing symptoms of illness stay at home. Symptoms like mild fever, cough, and runny nose can be early catch-signs of infectious diseases.
  • Teach cough and sneeze etiquette: Children should be taught to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. This should be done using the inside of the elbow and these habits should be reinforced with games.
  • Explain that personal items should not be shared: Children should be made aware not to share personal items like bottles, food, forks, and spoons. This is important to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Balanced nutrition and rest: Balanced nutrition of children in preschool should be ensured. Regular meals, healthy snacks, and adequate sleep strengthen the immune system.

Pre-School Examination is Important

Stating that it is recommended to examine children before schools start, Dr. Havva Evrengül said, "These examinations are important to evaluate the general health status of the child, detect existing health problems if any, and take necessary measures before starting school. In the examination, vision and hearing, vaccination status, development evaluation, dental exam, and general health check-ups are usually performed."
