Dr. Tanju Yılmazer, Medical Director of the Home Health Unit at Private Izmir Gazi Hospital and Family Medicine Specialist, spoke about the unique and holistic approach they provide to patients and shared what can be done to prevent dementia, a common health problem in elderly patients.

When we say "elderly," "dementia" comes to mind. Can you give us some general information about this topic?

Dementia is a progressively advancing condition where thoughts, behaviors, and emotions are affected, and cognitive abilities such as memory, speech, and problem-solving are lost, especially in the elderly.

Is it possible to prevent dementia? What can be done for this purpose?

It is a known fact that through small changes in our daily lives and lifestyle, up to 45% of cognitive impairment and dementia cases can be prevented, and it is never too late for these changes. The following can be done:

  • First, have your vision and hearing assessed. Loss in these functions is known to be linked to cognitive decline. Therefore, regular vision and hearing exams and the use of glasses and hearing aids when necessary are important. This is because our brain makes connections and evaluates the data it receives through senses it can actively use.
  • Take walks. This increases the blood flow to our brain and the oxygen carried to the brain. For this reason, continuous sitting and inactivity should be avoided.
  • Control your cholesterol levels. High cholesterol hardens the arteries, reducing blood flow to the brain and potentially causing cognitive decline.
  • Pay attention to your oral and dental health. It has been shown that there may be a link between gum diseases and dementia.
  • Maintain an active social life. This helps stay away from depression, which is one of the consequences of isolation. Even a social program scheduled once a month with family or friends will make a difference.
  • Wear a mask in polluted or smoky air to stay away from it. Findings that show a link between air pollution and dementia are increasing. Breathable particles in the air can cause some chemical reactions when they reach the brain. Using a mask will reduce this risk.
  • Protect your neck because; blood flow to the brain is provided through the neck vessels. Calcification, improper massage, and neck injuries resulting from accidents can reduce the blood supply and oxygenation of the brain enough to impair brain functions.
  • Pay attention to your sleep. Increasing sleep time and sleep quality will help stay away from dementia. Additionally, a rested memory is vital for brain health.

How can you support in this disease?

As seen, lifestyle changes are important for the prevention of dementia, and a unique approach is essential. We are ready and by your side for information, evaluation, and examination regarding prevention as much as slowing the progression of the disease and providing treatment.
